Maria Andrews (b London, England) is a silversmith and jeweller who graduated from Plymouth University with a BA (Hons) in 2020. Whilst studying she won awards from the British Art Medal Society and The Worshipful Company of Pewterers for works inspired by environmental issues. She has been selected for the Cultivator Graduate Start Up Award and is a Graduate member of Design Nation and part of Precious Collective.

Maria’s handcrafted contemporary jewellery designs are borne out of a deep rooted connection with nature and the environment. Using traditional silversmithing techniques her designs aesthetically and conceptually invite the wearer to celebrate and question the feelings that her pieces evoke surrounding how we interact with the world around us.

All jewellery made by Mala Valente Jewellery Design is handmade in Cornwall using eco-friendly methods, recycled metal, gemstones and plastic free packaging.

Made with care, Mala Valente Jewellery Design is mindful not to cause any harm to people or the planet.

Jewellery is a gift to be treasured, often bought as a token of love, so, it is important that when you do make that investment, it has integrity.

Recycled metals

All our precious metal is recycled, and we reuse as much of our own metal waste as possible such as the metal dust and shavings from sawing or filing. The methods utilised for the use of recycled metals are ancient traditional silversmithing methods which allow the materials to be repurposed in many interesting ways to produce unique outcomes.

Using recycled metals is our way of helping to sustain the environment rather than support the extraction of more materials which is both costly and damaging and has an adverse effect on the environment and the climate.

Upcycling precious metal

Sourcing ‘second hand’ metals not only allow us to recreate a beloved piece of jewellery in a new contemporary design, but it ensures that we are reducing our effect on the mining industry and therefore, the environment.

Ethical gemstones

We do our best to make sure all the diamonds and gemstones we use in our jewellery are as traceable and ethically sourced as possible. They are sourced from suppliers who adhere to the Kimberly Process.

The Kimberly Process Certification Scheme is an international, multi-stakeholder initiative set up in 2003 to increase transparency and oversight in the diamond industry to eliminate trade in conflict diamonds – ‘rough diamonds used to finance wars against governments’ around the world. Our suppliers trace their stones from their mine of origin.
